Puerto Rico Mission 2019

The Roanoke District Common Table is working to assist families devastated by Hurricane Maria in Vieques, an island off of the coast of Puerto Rico where 9,000 persons are still without access to power.

On behalf of the Puerto Rico Solar Panel Project team and the Roanoke District UMC Common Table, we would like to give thanks for all the prayers and interest we have received from our District churches. The total collected/ pledged so far is $39,537 of our $50,000 goal! (as of 7-11-19)

Our challenge is to raise $50,000, enough to provide 400-watt Solar Panel Kits for 50 homes in Vieques.

Our team is working on Stage 2, which is purchasing the solar panels and gearing up to send an UMVIM Team to Puerto Rico, September 19-28, 2019. We are working with REHACE (Rebuild, Puerto Rico Methodist Church's Disaster Outreach Committee) and assembling a 10-12 person team, who will deliver the kits and help with installation. We will have training to equip every team member for the task. The cost of the trip will be $1,000 per person. If you are interested in being part of this District UMVIM Team please contact Rev. Seungsoo "RJ" Jun at seungsoojun@vaumc.org.

So far, 18 churches out of our District's 56 charges, and a UM church from outside the district, have contributed to this project. There is also a wave of contributions coming to us from the Roanoke and New River Valley communities. The church is leading, and our communities are joining our passion to Share the Light!

Please let us know if you have any questions or would like the SHARE THE LIGHT team to help with resources or presenter to share this mission opportunity with your congregation.
